 Hutton's
Vireo
The Hutton's Vireo is
a small, grayish-olive vireo with a partial white eye
ring below, incomplete "spectacle" and 2 white
wing bars. Its song is a monotonous two part phrase,
either up-slurred or down-slurred: chu-whe, chu-wee
or che-eer, che-eer. Its call is a harsh chit-chit.
The Hutton's Vireo moves slowly, almost sluggishly
through the canopy, halting after every move to forage
for insects among the foliage. During winter, Hutton's
Vireo may join a mixed flock, where it is easily confused
with the smaller Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
The Hutton's Vireo gleans food from foliage and small
twigs, and occasionally hawks flying insects. It mostly
eats insects, plus some spiders and small berries. This
vireo builds a hanging cup nest that is anchored to
horizontal twigs and usually near the tips of the
branches primarily in oaks. The nest is 7 to 25 feet
above the ground.
The Hutton's Vireo is a year-round resident in
southwestern British Columbia south to southern
California, central Arizona, southwestern New Mexico and
western Texas. It prefers deciduous and mixed forests
(primarily oak woodlands) and live-oak tangles in the
canyons of the Southwest.
