 Hoary
Redpoll
The Hoary Redpoll, a
member of the Finch family, generally breeds and winters
farther north and on more open tundra than the related
Common Redpoll, only occasionally reaching the northern
United States. In areas where their ranges overlap in
parts of Canada and Alaska, the two birds do not
interbreed, although some experts consider them two forms
of a single species. The Hoary Redpoll feeds mainly on
plant materials, especially seeds, but also feeds on some
insects and larvae in summer. The Hoary Redpoll has a red
forehead, black chin, gray back with black streaks. The
Hoary Redpoll is very similar to the Common Redpoll but
has an unstreaked rump and a smaller bill. The male Hoary
Redpoll has a pink breast. The Hoary Redpoll prefers
weedy pastures and roadsides in the winter and tundra in
summer.
