 Franklin's
Gull Range Map
The Franklin's Gull breeds from eastern Alberta and
central Saskatchewan to western Minnesota, south locally
to east-central Oregon, northwestern Wyoming and
northwestern Iowa. It winters primarily in South America,
rarely in southern coastal California, and casually along
the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. The Franklin's
Gull breeds exclusively in shallow freshwater marshes and
sloughs in the temperate prairie belt. It favors shallow
wetlands up to 6 inches deep with bulrushes, cattails,
whitetop and common reeds, preferably near cultivated
lands. In migration and in winter, it inhabits sandy
beaches, sandbars, fields and pastures.
