 Cassin's
Vireo
The Cassin's Vireo,
the Plumbeous Vireo and the Blue-headed Vireo were
formerly considered a single species known as the
Solitary Vireo. The Cassin's Vireo occupies the
westernmost part of the former Solitary Vireo's range. It
breeds from British Columbia and southwestern Alberta
south to central Idaho and along the West Coast to
southern California. Most leave the U.S. in the fall but
a small number overwinter in southeastern Arizona. It
prefers coniferous and mixed forests.
Cassin's
Vireo Range Map
The Cassin's Vireo is very
similar to both the Blue-headed and Plumbeous Vireos,
with plumage roughly intermediate between the two. It's
duller and grayer overall than the Blue-headed Vireo but
shares that species' yellow sides and flanks, olive back,
white wing-bars and bold white "spectacles."
The song of the Cassin's Vireo is a series of phrases;
intermediate between clear notes of the Blue-headed Vireo
and rough, husky notes of the Plumbeous Vireo. Its call
is a husky chatter.
