Canyon TowheeCanyon Towhee
The California and Canyon towhees were long considered the same species, called the "Brown Towhee," although birders knew they had different songs and calls. The Canyon Towhee's song is a musical chili-chili-chili-chili and its call is a clear chud-up. It has gray-brown upperparts with a paler buff throat, buff undertail coverts and a rusty crown. There is a dark spot in center of the breast.

The Canyon Towhee forages on the ground for seeds and insects. It feeds insects to nestlings during the summer and eats predominately weed seeds during winter. It also eats grain and small fruits. The Canyon Towhee builds a bulky nest ranging from ground level up to 35 feet above the ground (usually 3 to 12 feet) in a variety of shrubs and low trees. It usually places its nest in the densest part of the foliage, supported by several branches.

The Canyon Towhee is a year-round resident from western and central Arizona, northern New Mexico, southeastern Colorado and west-central Texas southward. It inhabits brushy and rocky hills in arid country.
