Black
Rail Range Map
The Black Rail breeds locally along the Atlantic
Coast from New York south to central Florida; on
the Gulf Coast in eastern Texas and western
Florida; in Kansas, and from California to South
America. It winters along the coast of California
from the breeding range north to Tomales Bay; in
the Imperial and lower Colorado River Valleys of
southeastern California; along the Gulf Coast
from southeastern Texas east to Florida and in
South America. The Black Rail inhabits coastal
salt marshes and occasionally inland freshwater
marshes and wet meadows. It uses grainfields and
hay meadows to some extent. The Black Rail
prefers higher portions of a marsh, where
vegetation is rank and dense and the ground is
damp. It spends much of its time under matted
grasses in high salt marshes.
