Attracting
Finches
The best way to attract finches to
your backyard is to offer black oil sunflower
seed in a tubular bird feeder and a bird bath
(especially a heated bird bath during the winter
months).
House Finches feed primarily on birdseed, with
sunflower, nyger (thistle), white proso millet
and canary seeds being their favorites. House
finches will also help themselves to suet and
nectar feeders.
Anyone who maintains a winter bird feeder well
stocked with sunflower seeds will sooner or later
be visited by the Purple Finch. The majority of
the individuals will be the females and immature
males while only about ten percent will be
displaying the attractive rosy garb of the adult
male.
The Pine Siskin is a
highly social finch and can often be found at
bird feeders in large flocks or mixed with winter
flocks of American Goldfinches.
Finches, like all
birds, are attracted to a water source. A heated
bird bath will provide unfrozen water during the
winter months and can be used all year long.
